Tzu Chi Holds Distribution to 2,000 Families in New York
- Article Details

The six districts were Lindenhurst on Long Island, Hamilton, Lower Manhattan, Staten Island and South Toms River and Atlantic City in New Jersey. It was 12 days ago that the hurricane struck the New York area. Many homes still do not have electricity, gas or running water and temperatures are close to zero. The plight of many people is serious.
The volunteers divided into six groups to cover the different districts. They distributed US$600 cash cards, blankets and bags containing daily necessities to a total of 1,950 families. The Mayor of South Toms River, Joseph Champagne, took part in the distribution; to express his appreciation, he bowed deeply to the volunteers. The policemen on duty at the venue also expressed their gratitude.
The residents were especially moved to receive the cash cards; some of them were moved to tears, saying that it was like an infusion of blood that would save their life. Some said they would use it to pay repair men to come and restore their telephone line; others will buy construction materials to repair the damage which the floods have done to their homes and others will buy food. More important than any of these was the fact that the card is a symbol of concern, bringing warmth to the heart of the recipients. When they learnt that the money had come from the donations patiently collected by members of Tzu Chi, they took a bamboo bank from the volunteers, so they can become donors themselves. Some even rushed home at once to bring a jar of coins and make an immediate contribution to help others.
Tzu Chi volunteers continue on their charity work to comfort and assist more hurricane survivors.

DA.AI Wins the “Taiwan Green Classics Award” for the 2nd Consecutive Year
- Article Details
DA.AI Technology Co., Ltd. (DA.AI) always follows its concept to “conserve energy and reduce carbon emission” by not using any dyes and maintaining the original colors of its products. This action protects the environment from further pollution from the chemical dyes.
Green products are the accomplishments of 200,000 Tzu Chi volunteers.
DA.AI was awarded the first annual “Taiwan Green Classics Award” in 2011. Twenty-nine of DA.AI products from five of its eco series have received the 2nd annual “Taiwan Green Classic Award” this year. DA.AI had the most series of products displayed at the award ceremony. The products are from the Eco Blanket Series, Eco Clothing Series, Eco Scarf Series, Solar Powered LED Caps Series and Cute Baby Gift Boxes Series.
DA.AI continues to promote the values of “green” products and fully incorporates social responsibility in its business model. It practices the philosophy of “Coexist with Earth” and hopes to become a global “green” role model for enterprises.
DA.AI is the world’s first non-profit company dedicated to producing eco-friendly products and one of the world’s first non-profit companies that donate 100% of its net proceeds to charity. DA.AI adheres to Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s concept of “Coexist with the Earth” by integrating 200,000 Tzu Chi recycling volunteers’ efforts in Taiwan and manufacturers’ green production concepts to manufacture eco-friendly products. This is a cycle of love formed by the recycling volunteers, the volunteer entrepreneurs and the consumers to protect our Mother Earth.
Fabrics are not dyed to prevent environmental pollutions.
Along with DA.AI’s team members, Loving Puppy and Blessing Kitty (DA.AI Technology’s mascots) also participated in the grand awards ceremony. Loving Puppy and Blessing Kitty are a representation of the philosophy of “extend an article's life and create blessings and wisdom.” Just as Dharma Master Cheng Yen has said, “Lives are enriched by helping others and wisdom grows with self-awareness.” DA.AI has been promoting environmental education through different events, sharing and display booths. It hopes to bring each audience new perspectives and concepts from the heart.
All of DA.AI’s raw material including the flakes, chips, yarn and eco-textile products are all made from 100% recycled PET bottles. These products fulfill the “Global Recycle Standard” (GRS) from Peterson and Control Union World Group.
Two hundred and forty-five of DA.AI’s products have been awarded with the MIT Green Mark (including some that are still under the application process). DA.AI was able to once again win the “Taiwan Green Classics Award” in competition with so many resourceful enterprises because of its strict “green” production processes.

DA.AI Surprises at the Taiwan Trade Fair in Dalian
- Article Details
Since 2009, the Taiwan Trade Fair has been held in many cities in China including Nanjing, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Beijing, Jinan, Wuhan etc. For four days from August 31 to September 3, the fair for the first time took place in Dalian. DA.AI Technology, Co., Ltd. (DA.AI), with the support from Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), came to Dalian to promote the beauty and culture of its eco-friendly apparels and textile products and to share the Tzu Chi Foundation’s philosophy and culture of environmental protection.
On the third day of the exhibition, DA.AI was invited by TAITRA to participate in the forum called “Interaction between Vendors and Visitors,” a part of the Taiwan Boutique Products Pavilion. Tzu Chi volunteers carefully explained to the visitors about DA.AI’s core values and the philosophy behind each eco-product. They also invited all visitors to come by the DA.AI booth to learn more in depth about the Tzu Chi Foundation and its philosophy of environmental protection.
Even though it was DA.AI’s first time to introduce its eco-products in the Dalian area, the enthusiasm of the Tzu Chi volunteers made the visitors deeply supportive of DA.AI’s promotion of its culture of environmental protection. One visitor who bought a cooling undershirt came back the next day to buy two more. He said, “I came yesterday to buy your product, and after trying it on for a day, I think the quality is really great. That’s why I want to buy two more today, to share with my friends and family.” Throughout the exhibition, many visitors who bought DA.AI’s products became strong believers in the high quality of DA.AI’s products. This support from the public gives DA.AI a strong sense of confidence and helps to promote the philosophy of environmental protection in the Dalian area.
Even though the Taiwan Trade Fair is over in Dalian, DA.AI’s philosophy of environmental protection and its core values have won the support of the people there.

Asian Productivity Organization Amazed by the “Legend of Love”
- Article Details

Through the careful explanation and sharing on site, the Malaysian APO members were very impressed by DA.AI’s founding philosophy and innovative technology. They were even more impressed and inspired by the selfless dedication from Tzu Chi volunteers who recycle daily. They hoped that they could also practice how to love the Earth by recycling in their daily lives.
◎Recycling Centers Give Hope to Seniors
Malaysia is one of the twenty member countries of APO. Mr. Liao Zhicheng, the representative fromMalaysia’s APO said, “The main purpose of coming toTaiwanthis time is to learn how others do charity work and contribute to the world. After learning about this, I hope to share and promote such ideals with others back inMalaysia.”
Mr. Liao saw Ms. Li Qiulu, a Tzu Chi recycling volunteer, busy sorting out the recycled bottles in the sorting section. He stepped forward and asked, “Do you come here everyday? Do you like coming here? How do you get here every day?” Ms. Li replied with a smile and said, “I come here daily and I enjoy being a volunteer…” At the end of the conversation, he said, “Thank you for sharing. I’m so grateful to you.”
When visiting the Tzu Chi recycling centers, the group could see how each Tzu Chi volunteer selflessly dedicates his/her life to sorting and recycling. They also felt the joy and happiness from the Tzu Chi recycling volunteers and how Tzu Chi Foundation provides a chance for these recycling volunteers to interact with others and thus gives many seniors a spirit of hope and meaning in life.
◎Entrepreneurs Inspire Kindness and Dedicate Love
In a video shown, the group learned that five socially responsible entrepreneurs founded DA.AI. The company gives new lives to recycled PET bottles through the cycle of love and turns these recycled PET bottles into eco-blankets for disaster relief purpose and other eco-friendly products. DA.AI continues to research and develop new processes of manufacturing eco-friendly products and create more innovative eco-products. During the visit, Mr. Liao was surprised by DA.AI’s efforts to “turn trash into gold and gold into love.” He was even more impressed by the selfless dedication and kindness of the five founding entrepreneurs of DA.AI.
Towards the end of the visit, Mr. Liao shared and said, “This is a learning trip forAPO. When I return toMalaysia, the first thing I want to do is to share everything I learned from my Tzu Chi visit with the other 19APOmember countries. I want to encourage and inspire all on practicing Tzu Chi’s philosophy of how no act of kindness is too small to be done. The power of love is great; anyone can do this. Even a small unit in a company and not necessarily an entire corporation can start doing this.”
◎Undertake Social Responsibilities through Actions
Ms. Li Likuan from CPC’s APO Development Division was the main reason why the two members of Malaysia’s APOwere able to visit Tzu Chi recycling center in Neihu. She accompanied them on a very hot summer day and energetically said, “The main reason we invited APO members to visit is because we want others to understand and recognize the outstanding and socially responsible organizations and companies in Taiwan.”
Ms. Li sincerely hoped that from individuals to countries, everyone could be socially responsible. With everyone’s support, love can be passed onto every corner of this world. The visit was originally for two hours, but it went over time and took nearly three hours. No one was tired and wanted to continue the visit since they were learning a lot.
Taiwan is known for its people’s love and kindness. The eco-products from DA.AI are a result of love. Through recycling and innovative R&D technology, a new cycle of life is given to the Earth’s resources. The seed of recycling is passed on from person to person. DA.AI hopes to be a “well-digger,” like a never-ending stream of love, helping more people around every corner of this world. This, is the “legend of love.”

DA.AI’s Eco Polo Shirt Receives the 2012 Taiwan Excellence Award
- Article Details
DA.AI Technology’s signature product, Eco Polo Shirt, was awarded the 2012 Taiwan Excellence Award from a selection of 1,145 entries in the beginning of this year. The Taiwan Excellence Awards selection is based on four different criteria: R&D, design, marketing and quality. DA.AI’s implementation of green technology in research and development, innovation in design to convey the values of Taiwan’s excellent products, elevation of brand image in marketing through environmental education and promotion (in 2011, DA.AI held nearly 200 seminars to educate the public about environmental protection), and quality assurance through 13 different international certifications (including Global Recycling Standard certification from the Netherland’s Peterson Control Union, Taiwan Green Mark, the Carbon and Water Footprint Certifications from both Germany’s TÜV Rheinland and EPA), all demonstrated that DA.AI’s Eco Polo Shirt met the judges’ standard for each criterion.
Other than striving to conserve energy and reduce carbon emission in the manufacturing process, DA.AI adheres to its concept of “Coexists with the Earth” by using transparent recycled PET bottles to produce white recycled polyester yarn and green recycled PET bottles to produce green recycled polyester yarn as raw materials for manufacturing its eco-textile products. By maintaining the original colors of the PET recycled bottles and not adding dye or color, it not only conserves water usage but also limits the amount of polluted water from the chemical dyes, which causes more damages to our environment. 100 tons of water is needed to dye just 1 ton of fabric. Therefore, to limit water usage in all of DA.AI’s eco-textile products, DA.AI faces a very difficult task since it insists on not dyeing or coloring its eco-textile products. Even though in this competitive market, consumers’ needs are ever changing and always on the lookout for new and innovative products, DA.AI still insists on following the “right path” towards environmental protection.

「環保」意識,從自身做起;

- Article Details

- Article Details

Environmental Education Without Borders
- Article Details
On April 24, Tzu Chi volunteers accompanied a group of students fromThailandand thePhilippinesto cleanSevenStarBeachin Hualien. The students worked hard to pick up any trash they saw on the beautiful beach. It was like a treasure hunt for them as they concentrated on finding trash. The beach became clean after two short hours. The event not only taught the students not to litter, it also taught them that each individual could help in creating a clean planet.
DA.AI Technology (DA.AI) was invited to give a talk after the event ended. Huang Yenlu, a staff at DA.AI, talked about the importance and impact of environmental protection and global warming, and the concepts of reuse, reduce and recycle. Huang explained Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s concept of transforming trash into gold and showed the students how to transform PET bottles into the eco-shirt he was wearing. The students were amazed at how plastic bottles could be transformed into clothing products.
During the talk, the students learned that recycling could help to reduce consumption of resources and they also learned that recyclables could be transformed into textile products to help the people in need. At the end of the talk, the students were all raising their hands to answer quiz questions from Huang. In a short afternoon, the seeds of “Coexist with the Earth” were planted in each of their heart.
“I will encourage my family to recycle.”
“I will not drink drinks using plastic bottles.”
“I will share what I experienced inTaiwanwith my friends and family.”
These were the afterthoughts of the students who participated in this event. We wish that through the event, these students now have an in-depth knowledge about environmental protection.

In 2008, with Tzu Chi’ s Four Major Missions in their minds and the promotion of recycling and environmental protection in their hearts, the volunteer entrepreneurs from the Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association (TIHAA) set up a non-profit company named DA.AI Technology Co., Ltd. (DA.AI) to develop recycled polyester yarn. By upholding their initial selfless thought of cherishing our Mother Earth and applying their professional expertise, these volunteer entrepreneurs followed Master Cheng Yen’s encouragement to establish the company.

- Article Details

- Article Details
DA.AI was founded in December 2008. It is Taiwan’s first non-profit company dedicated to producing eco-friendly products and one of the world’s first non-profit companies which donates 100% of its net profit to charity.
DA.AI adheres to Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s concept of “Coexist with the Earth” by using recycled PET bottles as raw material to manufacture recycled eco-products, activating a new life cycle for the PET bottles and reducing the consumption of natural resources. 100% of DA.AI’s net profit and its investments are donated to the Tzu Chi Foundation to help the underprivileged.
DA.AI has developed recycled textile raw materials, such as recycled poly chips, recycled polyester fibers and recycled fabrics. These recycled raw materials are then used to produce eco-products such as clothing, beddings, and other everyday textile products. DA.AI’s production process has received a “Global Recycling Standard” (“GRS”) certification from the Netherland’s Peterson Control Union. In order to gain GRS process certification, all stages of production, from obtaining raw materials to manufacturing and trading of the products have to be in compliance with the GRS standard. The eco-friendly fleece blanket made with 100% recycled polyester has also received the Carbon Footprint Certifications from both Germany’s TÜV Rheinland and the EPA.
DA.AI works with over 8,626 Tzu Chi recycling stations in Taiwan. Each year, nearly 2,000 tons of post-consumer PET bottles are collected and recycled by over 200,000 recycling promoters, whom we regard as Bodhisattvas. The Recycling Bodhisattvas carefully sort and clean PET bottles, remove caps and bottle rings, helping to ensure the quality of raw materials. As of today, over 536,263,228 PET bottles have been recycled and regenerated.
A circle of love is formed as DA.AI uses PET bottles collected and sorted by recycling volunteers to generate eco-friendly products to be sold to the consumers, with 100% of its net profit donated to the Tzu Chi Foundation to help the people in need. With this unique socially responsible business model in mind, DA.AI hopes to encourage and inspire more businesses and organizations to join its efforts in protecting our Mother Earth and to give back to society.
Our History
- Article Details
In 1990, Dharma Master Cheng Yen, the founder of Tzu Chi Foundation, urged all Tzu Chi volunteers to engage in environmental protection work with their hands used for applauding.
Ever since then, many Tzu Chi volunteers have joined in the environment protection movement. Besides actively promoting and engaging in recycling and sorting recyclables, the volunteers also apply the concept of environmental protection in their daily lives.
In 2003, Master Cheng Yen encouraged a group of volunteers to research and develop food, clothing, housing, transportation, information and communication products which can be used in international relief missions. Thus, in November 2003, Tzu Chi International Humanitarian Aid Association (TIHAA) was formed.
TIHAA was worried about the impact of non-biodegradable plastic bottles on the ecology of the Earth. Therefore, in 2006, TIHAA started to gather vendors to set up assembly lines, using the recycled plastic bottles that Tzu Chi volunteers collected to produce eco-friendly textile products such as blankets. As of today, these blankets have been distributed to people in need during winter distributions and disaster relief missions around the world, benefitting more than 600,000 people. In 2008, with selfless kindness in their heart and the concept of “Coexist with the Earth” in their mind, five TIHAA volunteer entrepreneurs set up a company named DA.AI Technology Co. Ltd. (“DA.AI”) to develop technology used to produce all kinds of clothes, blankets and daily-use textile from the recycled plastic bottles collected by Tzu Chi volunteers.
In 2010, five entrepreneurs donated 100% of DA.AI's stock ownership to Tzu Chi Foundation, making DA.AI a unique, socially responsible business. The new business was awarded Taiwan Corporate Integrity Album by MOEA the following year.In 2011, after receiving the "Green Classics Services Award" and "Green Classics Product Award" from the first Taiwan Green Classics Award in 2011. DA.AI again received the highest honor from the Green Classics Award in 2012.
In 2012, DA.AI obtained a Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certification. DA.AI is committed to establishing a sustainable full recycling system, and gradually moving from "less" waste to "zero" waste within the life cycle of the products and services.
In 2013, DA.AI Technology was honored again with the “Taiwan Excellence Award “ and has become an exemplary “boutique enterprise” thanks to its multi-dimensional identities of ECO brand in Taiwan.
In 2014, being the three consecutive award winner, DA.AI not only received five more awards this year, but also was invited to participate in the EPIF 2014 International Green Classic Award Forum, showing the highest honor and recognition from the Taiwan Ministry of Economic Affairs.
DA.AI was established due to the inspiration and encouragement from Dharma Master Cheng Yen. Dharma Master Cheng Yen encouraged these entrepreneurs to gather more people to apply their professional expertise in researching and developing technology used for producing eco-products, thereby benefiting living beings in the world. Thus, with their professional expertise and selfless loving heart, these entrepreneurs joined hands in applying the concepts of environmental protection and charity in the development and production of eco-products.

- Article Details
Taiwan Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan and Taiwan External Trade Development Council were established to encourage Taiwan industries to upgrade and incorporate higher innovation value (innovalue) into their products.
The selection of Taiwan Excellence Awards is based on four different criteria: research & development, design, quality, and marketing. Each product must score equally well in each category in order to be selected. Each year, the judges select the products which are authorized to display the symbol of Taiwan Excellence along with the winning year. This year, out of the 1,145 products in the competition, DA.AI’s Eco Polo Shirt was one of the products that received the award due to its innovalue.
Each DA.AI Eco Polo Shirt is made by 14 recycled PET bottles. Each shirt has a tag attached to it, detailing the amount of carbon footprint reduced by making the shirt. As compared to using virgin raw material to make a shirt, when making the DA.AI Eco Polo Shirt, the amount of CO2 emitted is 299g less, while oil consumption and water consumption is 6cc and 1,050cc, respectively, less than using virgin raw material. Through the display of these numbers, consumers can clearly see that they are playing a role in mitigating global warming. Each shirt represents a green seed. DA.AI wishes that each seed has the opportunity to flourish, and create an ongoing green wave.

Grand Opening of DA.AI Eco Concept Store in Taipei
- Article Details
DA.AI Technology has been devoting its efforts to protecting the environment and regenerating recycled bottles since the inception of the company. It is Taiwan's first green social enterprise, and also the world's first NPC (Non Profit Company) that contributes 100% of its profits to help the needy around the world. In addition to implementing Master Cheng Yen’s concept of “Coexist with the Earth,” the company’s ultimate goal is to become an international benchmark for green enterprises.
On December 29, 2011, DA.AI Technology introduced its first DA.AI Eco Concept Store in Taipei. The store has been “upgraded” from a service center to a DA.AI Eco Concept Store, and it is located next to the Tzu Chi Foundation branch office in Taipei. The store interior is designed to be green and simple, decorated with recycled materials such as paper tubes. Through the store’s interior design, visitors can clearly see the concept of environmental protection that Master Cheng Yen is trying to convey to the public, as well as the core values of DA.AI Technology – “Culture of Environmental Protection, Cycle of Love and Contribution to Society.”
Besides the recycled materials used for the interior, environmental achievement data are also marked on the wall. From early 2009 to October, 2011, a total of 180 million PET bottles have been recycled, reducing carbon dioxide emission by 4 million kilograms and conserving 15 million liters of water, and 89,000 liters of crude oil. These numbers are evidences of DA.AI Technology’s ongoing mission of coexisting with the Earth.
DA.AI Technology’s eco-products have received numerous international recognitions. For example, its Eco Blanket has received Carbon Footprint Certification from TÜV Rheinland Group, Germany, and its gray Eco Blanket (used for international relief purpose) has received Water Footprint Certification from TÜV Rheinland Group. Generally, the amount of water consumption for producing a cotton T-shirt is 2,700 liters. Although DA.AI’s gray Eco Blanket is much bigger and heavier than a cotton T-shirt, the blanket consumes only 643 liters of water during the production process, therefore conserving water resources on our planet.
