Products Designed Out of a Compassionate Heart Spread Humanistic Aid and Love to the World

Facing the rapid climate change, Dharma Master Cheng Yen keeps on reminding everyone that we need to speed up our action to save the world, because we are running out of time. We can’t restore disasters that have already happened, but facing the more severe ones to come, we need to know how to respond. For this very reason, Dharma Master Cheng Yen decided to establish the Tzu Chi International Humanistic Aid Association (TIHAA), dedicated in researching and developing disaster relief related product in fields such as food, clothing, shelter, transportation, information technology, and communication, and be able to provide disaster victims with daily necessities as quickly and conveniently as possible.
Where there is disaster, there shall be Tzu Chi volunteers entering the scene to comfort the victims. To pass on the past rich experience, TIHAA hosts a camp once every two year to discuss and share the background ideology of the association, and update on the newest information and design. This year, over 2,000 volunteer gathered together in Hualien from 4/18 to 4/20 to attend this humanistic meeting.Walter Huang, the main convener of the camp as well as one of the founders of DA.AI Technology, shared with everyone the prospect of TIHAA to kick off the bi-annual gathering, followed by James Lee, also one of the founders of DA.AI, talking about DA.AI’s mission and direction. The Taiwan Environmental Protection Administration Vice-Director Yeh also came to the camp and shared with everyone facts on global warming. Taiwan’s carbon emission only takes up about 1% of the world in total, but each one of us emits nearly 12 tons of carbon per year, which is 2.45 times the global average. Thus, Taiwanese should take up part of the responsibility to lower carbon emission and protect the world from the harm of global warming. Finally, Dr. Lee Wei Sen shared ways that technology has been applied to disaster relief work, and suggested that we need to start thinking about how to prevent and reduce disaster before it happens.
Tzu Chi’s Haiyan typhoon international relief team also shared their experience in the Philippines. While the UN described the city of Tacloban as abandoned city, Tzu Chi volunteers revived the city through the method of “Cash for Work,” and helped the residents to rebuild their homeland. With rich experience in international relief, Tzu Chi developed many products based on the need of the disaster victims and/or the volunteers out in the field. DA.AI’s magical white pants, anti-punctual white shoes, Solar Power LED Backpack and Hat are all part of the Compassion Series, and as the name suggested, are designed based on a compassionate heart to comfort the ones in need.
The bi-annual TIHAA gathering concludes with the ex-minister of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Tsai Dui, sharing with everyone on the topic of “time, space, and people,” and that every one of us should consider how to efficiently utilize the time we have in this world to contribute as much as possible to society and the environment. Hope with everyone’s help, Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s call for “living a simple life, lowering our desire and consumption” will eventually became the main stream life style, and that the world will become a greener place.

面對社會環境急速變化，證嚴上人不斷呼籲「天下告急」、「來不及」， 證嚴上人進一步解釋：「來不及」的意思，就是現在已經發生了，來不及讓它不發生。面對一次比一次更加劇烈的「天災、地變」、觸目驚心的災變現場，人類雖然已經不能夠抵抗、逃避，但是，我們該如何因應？源自 證嚴上人這一分悲憫心，慈濟國際人道援助會 (簡稱『人援會』) 於焉成立。慈濟在國際賑災承擔的責任更重、救災資源需要更多。證嚴上人期勉 「要以無疆界的眾生為使命。」
哪裏有災難，就可以看到藍天白雲的慈濟人，慈濟的賑災、義診等慈善經驗備受肯定。兩年舉辦一次的人援會年度研討會，除了要把經驗一次又一次傳承下去，同時也希望號召更多有善心的實業人才參與。今 (2014) 年的主題『慈悲的後盾 - 慈悲科技馳援大愛』，計有來自全球各地近 220位人援會成員、行政團隊及有心致力於食、衣、住、行、資訊、通訊、綠能等領域之環保相關產品開發之專業人士，及超過220位工作人員，參加自4月18日起為期3天、在花蓮靜思堂舉行的研討會。
本次研討會開場由人援會總召也是大愛感恩科技董事長及發起人之一黃華德師兄分享人援會的緣起及未來的展望，大愛感恩科技總經理李鼎銘師兄也會分享公司的使命及願景。研討會專家課程邀請到行政院環境保護署葉欣誠副署長談『氣候變遷：困境與重生。』全球暖化釀成的極端氣候，致使現今各國各地持續呈現末日景象。台灣碳排放量卻約占全球的1%，每人一年排放量約近12噸，是世界平均值的2.45倍，台灣應該善盡世界公民的責任。國家災害防救中心李維森博士演講『防災科技與慈悲無限』談到將科技研發成果落實應用於災害防救工作，轉變被動搶救為預警疏散，因為光『救災』已經不夠，更要防災、減災。
『賑災實務分享』邀請到慈濟志工分享『愛的循環、善的效應 - 菲律賓海燕風災』。重災區萊特省獨魯萬市被聯合國形容為「棄城」，慈濟人『以工代賑』，接引三十萬人次受災鄉親，用自己的雙手投入整建自己家園，短短一個月內「棄城」從廢墟中重生。慈濟國際賑災經驗所研發出來的多項物資，包括大愛感恩防潑水白褲、LED照明志工帽，淨思香積飯，以及淨水器、簡易教室、靜思多功能折疊平台及等創新物資，在此次菲律賓賑災中均發揮大用。『慈悲科技、馳援大愛』這些應用都起於 證嚴法師的一念悲心，科技來馳援，讓挨餓受凍的災民，身心得到安頓、讓大愛能夠綿延。
研討會第三天上午的「人生經濟學」座談將邀請到前交通部長蔡堆師兄擔任主持人，與談者將分享對於「時間、空間、人與人之間」命題的詮釋，思考如何利用時間來增加人生的寬度與深度，在人與人之間守本分、盡本事，開闊愛與善的空間，讓生命更有意義，用『感恩、尊重，愛』祥和社會。
上人多年來苦心呼籲大家：要簡樸生活，節能、素食、資源回收、山林養息。正是要從防災、減災的根本做起，增進救災能力也是慈濟人援會不斷努力的目標。慈悲與科技的結合，讓慈濟的大愛救援千里之外而無疆界，也成為慈濟慈善堅實的後盾。

Total annual consumption of cleaning agents in Taiwan is estimated to be 200,000 tons, which means each person uses about 9 kilograms of detergent annually. And as a result, 225 liters of waste water containing chemical properties are discharged into our rivers each day. Once these chemicals make their way into our environment, the pollution generated can cause unthinkable consequences.

自稱環保天然 國家標章才保障

台灣從一九九三年開始實施環保標章，已有一千多種產品通過檢驗，但除了這個標章之外，坊間有很多商品都自我標榜天然或者環保，這些自我宣稱的綠色商品，很多還是驗出了環境賀爾蒙，消費者在採購的時候，還是要認明國家標章，對自己和對環境都比較有保障。
當你買下一種清潔劑，是否會關心裡面有哪些成分？但如果你有所期待，希望產品可以更好、更環保，或許不妨從這裡開始，看看它的標示。
消費者 張小姐：「檸檬香料，還有純水、香茅油，像檸檬香料。」
北市教育大學環教系 副教授黃基森：「第一個一定是看標示，標示裡面有什麼成分，他一定要看得非常清楚，那(很多產品)現在是連成分都沒有標示出來嘛。」
即使標示上寫了抗菌劑、界面活性劑，消費者也往往看不出成分；至於外包裝的「天然」、「環保」、「可分解」，更是沒有規範，也沒有明確定義。
環保署管考處處長 蕭慧娟：「很多的商品他會自己標示環保，也就是大家常常說的，叫做漂綠。」
漂綠，是全球消費者共同面對的現狀。這天，在一場研討會中，來自各國的業界代表，特別關注消費者知的權利，要如何分辨真正的綠色產品。
台灣德國萊茵營運長 曾寶島：「與其聽推銷員說，我們的產品是綠色的，其他的產品不是，消費者不如自行比較標示，就可以知道這些產品到底環不環保。」
另一個方法是辨別標章，我們不妨認識先這個圖案，官方認證的環保標章。
賣場公關經理 何默真：「一般有拿到政府的環保標章，就代表它已經經過政府檢驗合格，審核過了。」
問題是，許多產品強調環保、綠色，卻未必為真，也有業者自行驗證標章。
賣場公關經理 何默真：「在我們的這個標章裡面，它標榜是說，它是一個綠色環保的商品。」
如果把綠色視為一種概念，產品卻未必是百分百，從頭綠到底，又該如何管理?
環保署管考處處長 蕭慧娟：「我們廢管處正在修正資源循環法，你想要標示環保的時候，一定要先經過我環保署的同意。」
不過，會以環保為名的，不只是清潔劑，還有其他很多商品，即使在展覽中，消費者也不妨多問，多比較，就會知道箇中玄機。有業者在展場中推出環保燈具，說的是……
業者 歐陽如玉：「它高效節能之外，它還有十萬小時超長壽命。」
沒有說的是……
業者 歐陽如玉：「顧慮就是在那個固態汞合金的部分，目前它還沒有納入回收商品裡面。」
這一邊強調回收再製的新技術。
業者 杉浦雅昭：「我們必須關心環境。」
另一邊，業者坦言，背後一整套化學處理的流程，還是無可避免汙染。
台灣德國萊因營運長 曾寶島：「即使科技已經如此進步，但這一切才剛剛起步，我們要改變生產的方式，改變消費的方式，消費者必須靠我們自己。」
如果我們無可避免必須消費，就只能盡量購買有標章、在製程中汙染較少的商品，只有當綠色成為主流選項，未來才可能改變方向。

澎湖花火節開幕 倡環保不丟垃圾

2014年澎湖國際海上花火節，從這個月14號開始，為期兩個月(4/14~6/19)。在第一天的開幕式，活動地點觀音亭，湧入大批人潮，慈濟志工和慈青穿梭會場，宣導垃圾不落地、及擺設回收桶，吹了一整夜的海風，但看到會場沒留下任何一片紙張，就覺得再累都值得。
強勁海風，伴隨澎湖國際花火節開幕，遊客不斷往活動現場觀音亭聚集。
慈濟志工：「愛自己，也愛大地，垃圾不落地。」
宣導垃圾不落地的，是慈濟志工和慈青，還設置了回收桶，給民眾進會場前的再次叮嚀。
等活動正式開始，志工就把回收桶，搬到舞台附近，方便民眾丟垃圾。(NS)也把握時間，機會教育。
慈濟志工 與 民眾：「這像一般垃圾嗎？(這是一般垃圾)其實塑膠袋是可以回收的。」
煙火的燦爛，是一時，但留下的垃圾，會遺害許久。隨著人潮逐漸散去，慈青更是繞場舉牌宣導，也沿途撿拾垃圾。
慈青：「垃圾不落地，花火最美麗。」
這群志工和慈青，比遊客更早到，也最晚離開，吹了一整晚的海風，撿了一整夜的垃圾，有年輕學子主動幫忙回收，是最好的鼓勵。看到觀音亭，變得乾淨如昔，還多了塞滿後車箱的回收物，辛苦，沒白費。
