Marine debris is litter that ends up in our oceans, seas, or other large bodies of water. Of the materials that make up marine debris, plastics are the most abundant form of litter in our oceans. It is estimated that average plastic consumption per person is about 100kg per year. And in recent years, small plastic pellets, known as microplastics, have been discovered in our oceans and along our shorelines. Just exactly what are they? And how did it end up in the ocean?
