CAPTION: Tzu Chi Foundation and DA.AI Technology worked with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop On August 23, 1990, Dharma Master Cheng Yen made a speech and encouraged audience to "act in environmental protection with applauding hands." She called on Tzu Chi people to do resource classification and devote to environmental protection. Besides actively promoting and engaging in recycling and sorting recyclables, more than 200,000 regular/occasional environmental Bodhisattvas joined the environment protection mission to guard our Earth.

However, a large number of recycled plastic bags, bottles and cans may occupied environmental protection stations. Since the storage space is limited, and that the recyclables may also increase truck’s loading during transportation, Tzu Chi Foundation and DA.AI Technology worked with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) to develop "Environmental Reduction Compressor" to save energy, reduce CO2 emission and protect environmental Bodhisattva. The first generation compressor was completed by February 13, 2011, while the second generation in June 2012.

Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) noted that the compressor can decrease recyclable volume by as much as 92%, and reduce CO2 emissions by 8% and above according to data calculation from 24 Tzu Chi environmental stations in 2013. Today, these “green machineries” are being used on carton, bottle, plastic bag, iron/aluminum can and much more in Tzu Chi's Recycling stations to assist volunteer better manage recycled materials, which can be made into eco-blanket for global disaster relief distribution. The compressor not only reduces space occupation, but also educates people how to “work smarter” in the environmental protection mission.
