Tzu Chi's recycling mission began in 1990, when Master Cheng Yen called on the public to carry out environmental conservation. In the past two decades, Tzu Chi volunteers have grown from amateurs to expert recyclers. In a recent year-end blessing ceremony in Taichung, Master Cheng Yen praised the recycling volunteers for their hard work and encouraged them to continue on.
慈濟的環保志業於1990年，證嚴上人登高一呼開始，歷經20個年頭，慈濟志工從環保門外漢成長為專家。在台中近期的一次的歲末祝福，證嚴上人稱讚環保志工的努力，也期許他們繼續加油。
< Kitchen waste processing began 2007 >
Tzu Chi's first kitchen waste processing station began operating on April 1st of 2007 in the Taichung Chapter Grounds. The station turns what occupies about 35 percent of household waste into valuable organic fertilizer. Since then, many of Tzu Chi's recycling stations have also incorporated such a station.

2007年四月一號，慈濟在台中志業園區成立了廚餘屋，把家庭垃圾中佔百分之35的有機廢棄物轉化成對環境有益的堆肥，從一生百萬，現在許多環保站都設置廚餘屋。
慈濟志工 林淑嬌：「慈濟的環保由點發展，到全面開枝散葉，我們要為大地帶來希望的春天。」
靠著巧思，垃圾變黃金，延續物命。
「這就是我們國際賑災穿的，剛剛送來的，才做出來的，還很新鮮喔！」台上的慈濟人成了模特兒，展示由回收寶特瓶製作完成的服裝。
證嚴上人：「我們慈濟人從外行做到變成垃圾的博士，很多國外人士來台灣取經。」
上人稱讚慈濟志工在環保的用心，及大愛感恩科技公司的研發。20年前上人的善念，如今在全球各地形成風潮。
證嚴上人：「我們用心，垃圾真的變黃金，慢慢分類慢慢整理，就能夠推動到每一個家庭都變得很清潔。」
上人開示，環保志工繼續努力，也要發揮智慧，讓環保愈做愈精密。
