A former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General recently visited Taiwan and was invited to tour Tzu Chi, gaining a deeper understanding of the Foundation’s long-standing work in humanitarian aid, humanistic culture, education, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

The visit was especially meaningful, as the former UN leader had served as a disaster relief coordinator during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, where Tzu Chi’s humanitarian response first came to his attention. This exchange was made possible through Lily, a participant in an International Youth Leadership Development Program, who helped facilitate the visit and foster meaningful dialogue.

During the visit, the delegation learned more about Tzu Chi’s global humanitarian missions and its commitment to compassionate action. Through firsthand experiences, they gained insight into how Tzu Chi integrates humanitarian relief, environmental sustainability, education, and humanistic values to create lasting positive impact in communities around the world.

DAAI also shared how circular economy initiatives and compassionate technology complement Tzu Chi’s global missions by transforming recycled resources into sustainable products that support disaster relief, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. These efforts demonstrate how innovation and compassion can work hand in hand to address global challenges.

It is hoped that this exchange will further strengthen mutual understanding in the fields of international humanitarian cooperation, sustainable development, and social innovation, while fostering new opportunities for cross-border collaboration and collective action to build a more compassionate and sustainable future.
